World acclaimed speaker Søren Hermansen Addresses City Leaders on Renewable Energy Initiatives

SANTA FE, NM – The City Business and Quality of Life Advisory Committee will hear a presentation from world acclaimed speaker Søren Hermansen who will discuss renewable energy initiatives in Denmark and around the world at its regular monthly meeting on October 8, 2013 11:00 a.m. in City Council Chambers.

“We are so pleased and honored to hear from renowned international renewable energy expert Søren Hermansen who’ll address Santa Fe business leaders on these very important issues,” said Mayor Pro Tem Rebecca Wurzburger.

The City Business and Quality of Life Advisory Committee is responsible for implementing the City of Santa Fe’s economic development initiatives. It consists of twelve members that are appointed by the Mayor; two of the members are City Councilors. The Chair of the Committee is Mayor Pro Tem Rebecca Wurzburger and its Vice-Chair is Councilor Chris Rivera.  The remaining members are representatives from business, labor and economic development.

Who:               Søren Hermansen is the director of Samsoe Energy Academy and the head of the Samsoe renewable energy island project. His mission is to demonstrate that it is possible to create a self-sufficient society based 100% on renewable energy. In 2008, Søren Hermansen was named one of the ‘Heroes of the Environment’ by Time Magazine. In 2009 he was awarded the Gothenborg award – the Nobel prize of the environment. Other Awards include the Energy Globe ’08 and Eurosolar ’02. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at Aalborg Universitet. The Samsoe project is an effort spearheaded by the Danish government to demonstrate the feasibility of sustainability. Starting in 1997, the island of Samsoe (pop. 4,100) managed to cut its carbon footprint by 140% through community involvement, and today exports wind-power to the European mainland. The island’s success as a model for the energy revolution draws thousands of visitors and tourists from around the world, eager to learn how this was accomplished.
