City of Santa Fe Muchas Gracias for the

Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library

Since 1974, the non-profit Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library has helped to support the Santa Fe Public Library by raising money to provide the resources for additional programming, much-needed materials and equipment, support for children’s summer reading and other programs, and special events throughout the year. The Friends commit their time and resources to preserve and enhance our libraries for generations today and tomorrow because they understand the critical importance of a well-funded library to our community.  In the past year, from July 2013 through June 2014, a total of 119 Friends volunteers contributed 9,425 hours of their time to support the Santa Fe Public Library.

Now, therefore, in honor of their fortieth anniversary and forty years of service to the community of Santa Fe, the City of Santa Fe presents this Muchas Gracias Award to the Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library.

Today is #GIVINGTUESDAY

The Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library have joined #GivingTuesday, a new national day dedicated to giving, similar to the way Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are synonymous with holiday shopping.

The Friends are an independent non-profit organization whose mission is to support the public library by providing funding, advocacy, programming, services, and materials that enrich the diverse community it serves. Virtually every penny donated to the Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library directly supports:
  • Expanded materials collections, including audio and video titles, electronic databases, books in Spanish, language programs, large print books, audio books, and e-books.
  • Children and family programs such as the summer reading program, after school programs, pre-school story times, and Books and Babies.
  • Author presentations and lectures
We hope you will join us by making a tax-deductible contribution on December 2nd to demonstrate your support for the Santa Fe Public Library.

There are two easy ways to make your GivingTuesday donation:
  1. Donate online
  2. Mail your check payable to “Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library.”

Armistice Day: In Remembrance and Hope

On Tuesday, most governmental agencies in Santa Fe, including the public libraries, will be closed in observance of Veterans Day. Like Independence Day, Veterans Day is a federal holiday that is always observed on a particular date because of its historical association with that date -- November 11th. Monday marks the ninety-sixth anniversary of the day in 1918 when, at 11:00 am, the armistice signed by Allied and German commanders in a railroad car (pictured) in northern France took effect and the guns of The Great War were silenced. Over four years of carnage and terrible destruction, costing millions of military and civilian lives, had ended. All was, finally, quiet on the western front.

Because it was the armistice on this date (and not the subsequent peace treaties) that actually halted the fighting, November 11th came to be recognized as the end of “the war to end all wars." In the United States the 11th was called Armistice Day until 1954; across the Atlantic it became Remembrance Day -- a day to honor the memory and sacrifice of the war dead. Many nations observe an official "Two Minutes Silence" on November 11th at 11:00 am, to encourage people to stop their routine activity and pay quiet respect to those who gave their lives repelling aggression.

What became known as World War I did not end all wars; in fact, the punitive terms of the 1919 peace treaties helped give rise to the vastly more destructive, and this time truly global, World War II. Other wars and conflicts have continued to erupt in the sixty-nine years since the conclusion of World War II. World peace seems a forlorn ideal, as far off as it ever has. But what happened, or more precisely what stopped happening at 11:00 am on November 11th ninety-five years ago has inspired people to hope and pray for a permanent silencing of guns and a lasting peace. Do take two minutes on Tuesday, at 11:00 or some time of your own choosing, to pause and join the world in its yearning for peace.

New Sculpture at Southside Branch Library!

Artwork: Above as Below, Michael Sharber

From the artist:

“As to "Story"....  This piece is part of a group that embraces animals and plants within the Earth elements.  I am able to visit the Sea of Cortez each year and snorkel with a large variety of fish, sometimes swimming within schools containing hundreds of fish.  These vacation events seem to have influenced me greatly without me planning it, the result being sculptures that embrace life forms.  The boat shape is a magical symbol I use often, a vessel shape, the feminine principle, in this instance I stripped it to its structural bones.

How I Work-
I will first have an image of a sculpture in my mind then I will do a quick sketch to capture the concept.  Next I will design the sculpture while thinking about how it will be constructed taking into consideration materials I have on hand.  I also design a work to be in parts that can be assembled by one or two people without a lot of fuss.  Next step is to begin construction of the piece, which is a wonderful journey.”
