The City of Santa Fe Arts Commission Community Gallery, in proud partnership with Mining the Unconscious: A Creative Path to Self Knowledge, announces the opening of “Mining the Unconscious” a juried exhibition of art by 32 New Mexico artists referencing Jungian themes explored in C. G. Jung’s groundbreaking and beautifully illustrated The Red Book, published posthumously in 2009. Artists participating in the exhibit were selected from an unprecedented 143 submissions. Their work represents a variety of media including video, mixed media, sculptural and two-dimensional works.

“Mining the Unconscious” is the first of three exhibits and numerous community programs that will take place as part of Mining the Unconscious: A Creative Path to Self Knowledge during Summer 2011. The project was conceived by four local artists who were inspired by the The Red Book: Belinda Edwards, Michele Altenberg, Harriette Tsosie and Laura Langdon. The Community Gallery is located inside the Santa Fe Community Convention Center, 201 West Marcy Street, at the intersection of Sheridan Street. Mars: Inside and Out

The Mars: Inside and Out Spring program at the Main Library celebrated the last session on April 12^th with games and cupcakes. This was an eight-week science program that involved children in hands-on experiments to help them understand the features of Mars. They simulated rainfall to make channels, caused volcanoes to erupt and created both large and small craters. This after-school science experience made learning fun. As one parent commented at the last class, “My son couldn’t wait for Tuesdays so he could come to the library.”

The Science After School program was sponsored by the Los Alamos National Laboratories Foundation.

Celebrate young artists from FACT's Spring 2011 visual arts programs in Santa Fe! Attend the Opening Reception where FACT: Fine Arts for Children & Teens will supply free art-making materials for families to create their own works of art. If making and looking at art isn't enough, refreshments will be offered at the opening.

Featuring over 150 artwork pieces, this exhibition showcases the creative talent of students from Agua Fria, César Chavez, Salazar, and Sweeney Elementary schools as well as art from the Santa Fe Indian School, the Youth with Promise program, the Juntos los Jueves program and FACT ARTbarn Community Studio classes.

Founded in 1990, FACT: Fine Arts for Children & Teens is a non-profit organization that provides visual arts programs to 4,000 youth in northern New Mexico. FACT is nationally recognized for its innovative community-based arts education that supports life long learning.

The 12th annual Celebration of the Book features shining examples of the book-arts craft and offers free, hands-on workshops to create your own. In the hands of an artist, books become more than sheets of paper between two covers. Pages pop up. Weavings appear. Albuquerque artist Marilyn Stablein reimagines packages of sewing notions into pages for her work, Inflation:A Biased View.

Co-sponsored by the Press at the Palace of the Governors and the Santa Fe Book Arts Group, the event is free with museum admission. Children 16 and under are free; NM residents are free on Sundays.

The hands-on workshops will be offered only on Thursday and Friday, when masters of the book-arts craft will share their skills with school groups and anyone else who’d like to participate. Have your name written by a calligrapher, learn simple book structures, write poetry or engineer a pop-up card.

On Thursday, Santa Fe Poet Laureate Joan Logghe will be working with kids on poetry from 10 am to 2 pm. For all workshops, morning sessions are from 10 am to noon, and afternoon sessions are from noon to about 2:15 pm. Registration is not required for these free workshops, and participants will be able to rotate through the different activities.

Teen Graphic Novel / Manga Workshops

with FACT: Fine Arts for Children & Teens

Part I: Creating a Character:
Explore the art of illustration in the style of Manga and graphic novels! Participants will develop different characters focusing on facial expression, gestures, and fashion. Illustration materials include using nib pens, ink, and colored pencils on vellum and acetate.

Part II: Designing a Story:
Learn effective techniques for visual storytelling! Using the characters developed in the first series, participants will draw a one page scene from a story focusing on pacing and layout design.

New Mexico Women Author's Book Festival

The 3rd Annual New Mexico Women Authors’ Book Festival will be held from Wednesday, September 28 to Sunday, October 3, 2010.

This year the program has expanded to include a program with best-selling author Anne Lamott. She will be giving a talk at The Lensic at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, September 28.

The rest of the festival is at the New Mexico History Museum at 113 Lincoln Avenue. There are a variety of workshops and exhibits on October 1-3.
