Southside Summer Reading Party

Summer reading program 2011 was out of this world! We had record number of sign ups, and tons of kids who wanted to read cool books and plenty of them wanted to win a bike!

Wiley1079 children signed up this year, more than ever recorded in the past! Special programs and crafts were held every month for the Summer Reading participants and their families.

Bicycles were a real draw to encourage children to read. Three bicycles were donated at every branch. The Friends of the Library sponsor all of Summer Reading, from printing, to programs to prizes. This year the Police and ASCME3999 also donated a bicycle each and two staff people donated a bicycle.

At Southside, last year twin siblings won the girls and boys bike, this year two five-year-olds won the boys and girls bikes! Wiley won the boys bike and is very excited to grow into his new wheels. Wiley loves to read and two of the books he enjoyed were The story of Darth Vader and The Berenstain Bears and The Spooky Old Tree. His auntie would bring him in to turn in his reading log that showed he had to read at least six books a week!

MadisonMadison’s name was picked out of the box by our performer Andy Mason for the Summer Reading Program party. This five-year-old girl comes in with her mom and her sister at least once a week to check out books. She was so surprised when she came in to get books and found out she had won the bike! Her big sister was so happy for her, and mom says Madison is enjoying reading “SpongeBob” and “Arthur” books these days! What a great summer!

The Summer Reading Program is over 70 years old and continues to encourage children to read. Every child who read this summer received a special Summer Reading Program certificate. Children who finished the eight-week program also got to choose a book as a reward.

Library Summer Reading Grand Prize Entries

Grand Prize 1

Grand Prize 2Our first grand prize entries marking the third week for the Summer Reading Program came in with the children's reading logs as soon as the doors opened Saturday at Southside Library. The grand prizes are 3 bicycles at each branch. The Friends of the Library contributed a boy's and a girl's bike at each location. In addition, the Santa Fe Police Officers Association, AFSCME Local 3999, the Fire Department, and an Anonymous donor also provided funds for a bike to encourage children to read.

A young girl and her brother are enjoying coming into the library for books, and getting prizes every week. The coupons for Pizza sponsored by Papa Murphy’s and GCCC swim passes are exciting for the families as well.

It’s not too late to have your children ages up to twelve years old to sign up at any of the three Santa Fe Public Libraries for the Summer Reading Program for fun and keep them reading through the Summer.

Bike WinnerBike WinnerWinnerWinnerWinnerWinner

From Southside: It's cool that both of our winners have twin siblings! Evan said he was so excited when he found out he won. Being a star reader, he was able to pick a new book as a much-earned prize. He picked a Three Bears board book so that he could read it to his 11 day old sister. Both he and his twin brother Michael visit the library on a regular basis with their family.

Joanna won the girl's bike at Southside. Her twin sister and father came in with her to claim her prize. She said so was so surprised that she won the bike and she said she comes to the library because there are so many different kinds of books.

Awash in the Inland Sea

Sea Creature CraftThe Santa Fe Public Library Summer Reading Program, Make a Splash! Read!, has been a smashing success. We have over 950 kids signed up at all 3 branches. With a packed schedule of crafts, performances, storytimes, and art workshops, kids have been finding out how much fun it is to read.

One of the crafts this summer was Sea Serpent: Create Your Own Sea Creature. Even for desert-dwellers, the call of the ocean depths sparked incredible creativity and imagination. The smile on this boy's face as he holds his stingray says it all.

Be sure to check out our Summer Reading Page for even more programs, and don't forget to register for the End-of-Summer Party at your branch. Most of all, pick up a book this summer!

Make a Splash! Make a Difference!

Dive in to a Great BookThe Summer Reading Program, Make a Splash! Read! is in full swing for all kids from birth to age 12. If you haven't registered yet, it's not too late to head to your local library and sign up. If you think Summer Reading is all prizes and games and puppets, think again!

According to the New Mexico State Library, "students who participate in summer reading programs score higher on reading tests than those who do not participate". This is especially important in New Mexico because in the Nation’s Report Card, "NM 4th graders scored lower than students in 43 other states on national standardized tests in 2009. Only 52% performed at or above the test’s Basic level." The 2009 Kids Count Data Book and the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy have more statistics and facts that illustrate how important reading is in childhood in creating literate adults.

The Summer Reading Program is a fun and free way to ensure that kids are learning to read and learning to love reading. So don't let the summer fun fool you. In the midst of the parties and magic shows, there's a whole lot of learning and literacy going on. Pick up a book today!
