Pop Quiz!

Did you know?

  • One third of the American public, an estimated 77 million people over the age of 14, used a library computer in 2009.

  • Young people between 14-19 were most likely to be using computers for educational purposes, users between the ages 25-54 were focused on employment and training, and older adults focused on health information.

  • The majority of library public access computer users (86 percent) reported they had “regular access to a computer and the Internet for your personal use” at home.

  • People who lacked home access were frequent users, with 65 percent reporting that they used computers and the internet in the library at least once a week or daily.

  • Between 2000 and 2007 alone the availability of Internet terminals in public libraries increased by 90 percent on a per capita basis.

Where have we found all these fun facts? The results of the U.S. Impact Study by the University of Washington have come in. We invited you to participate in this study, and we're appreciative of those of you who did! The results definitely put to rest many of the myths about public library computer use. It's not going away anytime soon, and is becoming a core service to our communities.

Common Craft Security

We've already blogged about Common Craft, that fantastic source of short and informative videos. For anyone and everyone who uses a computer, public or private, please check out this video about Secure Passwords. It gives you tips to make your password hack-resistant, and also gives valuable advice about using publicly-shared computers.

While you're on the site, check out some of their other videos. For example, if you've always wondered about that Wikipedia, they provide a fantastic introduction. You'll be an expert in no time.

We Make an IMPACT

Last spring, we asked you to participate in the IMPACT study. This first-ever nationwide survey examined “how people use the free computers and Internet connections in public libraries”. Well, now the results are in, and it looks like more people are relying on public library computers than anyone could have guessed.

Some highlights from the study:

  • One third of Americans, about 77 million people, use public library computers
  • Patrons living below the poverty line had the highest rate of library computer use at 44%
  • One in four Americans use a public library computer while traveling
  • One quarter of teens used their library at least once a week
  • 80% of users made a change in their diet after using the library computers
  • Two out of three patrons using library computers are helping out friends or family

The Huffington Post has a summary about the study, or you can read the full report Opportunity for All: How the American Public Benefits from Internet Access at U.S. Libraries in HTML or PDF - 212 pages. Minnesota Public Radio has also published a commentary that brings life to these statistics.

Thanks to all our patrons who participated!

Grzimek's Animal Life

GRZIMEKSWe have a new online resource, Grzimek’s Animal Life database. Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia has been the go-to source for laypeople for over 30 years, and now you can access this online! The online database also has features that just can't be included in a print encyclopedia, such as videos of lions and audio clips of bird calls.

Grzimek's, pronounced chimeks, has information that is useful to all ages of animal lover, whether you're in elementary school doing a report on a duck-billed platypus, or a researcher who needs definitive information about the owls of Russia. Because of this wide range, we have links to this database on our Online Resources page, and a fun widget on our Children's page.

You can access Grzimek's outside the library with your library card, but not through Research Pro. As always, if you have any questions, be sure to call or visit your local reference librarians!

One-Click Audio Questions -- Answered!

One Click Logo Now that we've had One-Click Audio downloadable books for about a month, we've encountered some questions from you, the patrons. So here are some answers!

  • 10 books can be downloaded at a time
  • Downloadables check out for 21 days
  • Books can be renewed once
  • The books cannot be "turned" in early
  • You can still also check out 4 books-on-CD at the same time
  • One-Click Audiobooks will not show up on your library record
  • To see your One-Click checkouts, you need to go to the NetLibrary site
  • If you are creating a new NetLibrary account from home, you need to first click on one of the NetLibrary links from the Catalog and login to your library account before being sent to the NetLibrary page
  • The Library has over 2100 titles available for downloading
  • Each month the Library gets 30 new titles

We've also discovered that Mac users need to do an extra step or two to make the downloads work. NetLibrary has an excellent help page that can guide you through the process.

While library staff are able to assist with guiding you through the sign-up or download process, we're not able to troubleshoot technical difficulties with your computer. Please check the NetLibrary Help pages if you encounter error messages and problems.

We hope that you're enjoying the ease and convenience of the One-Click Audio downloadable books! As always, stop in to your local reference desk or call us if you have any questions.
