6th Annual Adult Spelling Bee Held at Main Library on Sunday, September 28, 2008
About twenty five spelling mavens took part in the sixth annual Adult Spelling Bee to benefit the Santa Fe Public Library, sponsored by Qforma. To determine a winner, several spell-offs were held at the end of the regulation spelling bee. 2007 winner Dorothea Migliori ultimately nipped 2006 winner Virginia Gaines, correctly spelling pahoehoe* in the sudden death playoff round.
Participants did not have to stand up in a line, like old school days spelling challenges; the spelling bee is a written contest. The most controversial word was quean, an impudent or disrespectable woman, and the word that got the most laughs was succotash, a food dish composed of lima beans and corn cooked together. The spelling arbiter was Sven Redsun, retired three time winner of the Spelling Bee.
Winners were First Place, Dorothea Migliori, who received $200 from Qforma. Second place was Virginia Gaines, who received $125 from Los Alamos National Bank. Lois Hammer was third, receiving a $100 gift certificate from Collected Works Bookstore. Other sponsors included gift certificates from Video Library, Java Joe's, Downtown Subscription, Travel Bug, Las Chivas Coffee Roaster and Miklo's Coffee Bean.
