Taking a Break

Winter WonderlandHappy Winter!

Our wildly popular Children's and Teen programs will be taking a break for the holidays.

For the week of November 21-25, Thanksgiving Week, there will be no PreSchool Story Time at all three branches. Also, the Teen Program at Southside will not be held on Thursday, November 24.

PreSchool Story Time is taking a winter break starting the week of December 19. Storytime will resume after the new year starting the week of January 9, 2012.

The Teen Programs are taking a break as well. The last one of the year will be on Thursday, December 15. They'll resume on Thursday, January 5, 2012.

In the meantime, check out the Children's page for some special holiday events that are fun for the whole family!

Crafty Ladies

Every Wednesday morning, Bernice, Ethel, and Margy come to the children’s room at the Southside Branch and help us out with Preschool Story Time. The children love them. We love them. Helping out with Preschool is wonderful. But that’s not all these gifted ladies do. Often Margy will bring in bags of yarn. Bernice and Ethel will take that yarn and some of their own and turn out something fantastic – hats and blankets and booties, in all sorts of designs and colors. And what do they do with them? They donate them. These ladies have donated literally hundreds of hats to tiny heads in need. They donate to hospitals and shelters, to neighbors and friends. These crafty ladies are truly angels. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts for their time, love and generosity.

Horn of Plenty

Thanksgiving CraftA fun part of preschool story time on Wednesdays at Southside is that we have a different theme every week, and last week’s theme was Thanksgiving. I spared the turkey, and there weren’t any gobble gobble here gobble gobble there rhymes. I didn’t know if there were any vegetarians in the room, so we went in another direction. We read stories, like Old MacDonald Had a Farm, and did rhymes like ”If you're thankful and you know it”. We talked about the food we buy and grow and love for our friends and families. The two-year-olds get it. They don’t really want much — just a home, their family, food to eat, feel safe, be read to, play, to learn. The craft after stories had room on the wreath for things they were thankful for and what they cherish to be written on the leaves. I saw many things, the sky, trees, books, mommy, daddy’s job, toys, written down. But not one television. Just saying…Thank you.
