Our downloadable audiobooks are now available in an easier-to-use interface. We still have thousands of books for you to download and enjoy, and will be adding more every month. You will need to sign up for a new account on the OneClickDigital page, but will benefit from new features. If you have audiobooks downloaded right now, you may need to download them again from the new interface.

If you do run into problems, please be patient as we switch over services. There are still some bugs we're working out of the OneClickDigital system. As of today, July 20, the NetLibrary website, Media Center, and Download Manager will no longer be available to us. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

A Catchall of Downloads

A number of links have crossed my screen lately, many of them offering free or low-cost downloads of eBooks or eAudiobooks. Check them out, and expand your eXperience.

LibriVox offers free audiobooks in the public domain. The files are available in mp3 or ogg format, and there's also a weekly podcast. Feeling dramatic? You can volunteer to read!

Open Library allows you to borrow eBooks. If you're already a member of one of the 150+ participating libraries it's an online interlibrary loan, or as they call it: In-Library Lending. If not, don't fret: Open Library also has over a million free eBooks available.

A resource to keep an eye on is Byliner.com, a site for original writing from today's big authors. As of this writing it's in beta, but it's already offering downloads by Jon Krakauer, William T. Vollman, Jamie Malanowski, and Malcolm Gladwell. Also, the Byliner Blog is a great place to drop in, even if you're not actively downloading.

National Academy Freebies

A popular saying among librarians is "information wants to be free". Whether we mean it as free as in unfettered, or free as in no-cost, can depend on the situation. But either way, no-cost, easily-accessible, not-charging-a-dime, click-of-a-mouse information is a wonderful thing.

So it's incredibly exciting that the National Academies are making a lot of their information, you guessed it, FREE! Over 4,000 reports and books from the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council will now be available as free PDFs. Topics are numerous and include Biology, Education, Social Sciences, and Environmental Studies. Just head to the National Academies Press website, and see what sort of free information tickles your intellect.

Free eBooks!

We’re getting our feet wet with free eBooks. These are full-text books that can be read online or downloaded to eReaders such as the Kindle and Nook. We offer over 400 titles through our catalog, courtesy of the non-profit Project Gutenberg. We have a Featured List of the titles, and you can also find them by doing a Call Number search for eBook.

EBooks can be identified by the following icon:






Project Gutenberg has over 30,000 titles, and they are all works that are in the public domain in the United States. You'll find classics such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, as well as more esoteric titles such as Hand Shadows to Be Thrown upon the Wall (1859). There are also titles of Chinese fiction, in Chinese, from the Ming Dynasty! We hope to add more to our catalog as they become available.

These items do not need to be checked out or returned, and there is no limit to how many books you can download. However, since this is a free product from a non-profit organization, technical assistance from the library and from Project Gutenberg is limited. However, you can find information on the How-To Wiki.

eBooks Await

Are you curious about eBooks? We are too! We've been getting tons of requests for downloadable texts for your eReaders. Just to assure you, we're looking into options from various vendors for eBook subscriptions.

In the meantime, there are some stop-gap measures you can take. If you have an MP3 player or iPod, visit our One-Click Downloadable Audiobooks page and listen to some interesting titles. For free eBook options, we have listings on our About Books and Literature page. And while we're weighing our options, let us know what you're looking for in an eBook provider. Selection?
