City of Santa Fe Announces 2nd Annual Water Conservation Challenge

The City of Santa Fe is proud to announce its involvement in the second annual National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. Starting in the month of April, Santa Fe has entered into a friendly community-based competition between cities across the nation to see who can be the most “water wise”. The challenge is for residents to recommit to conserving water, energy, and other natural resources on behalf of the city through a series of informative, easy-to-use online pledges.  The City encourages residents to take the pledge at www.mywaterpledge.com in the month of April, and show other cities in the nation the positive measures we take for our environment.

“Santa Fe is a national leader in water conservation,” said City of Santa Fe Mayor David Coss. “I would like to personally thank the residents of Santa Fe for our continued success with water conservation and urge them to recommit as we head into another year of severe drought. We know just how precious our water is. This challenge gives us an opportunity to keep our conservation efforts up and keep our water use down,” Coss stated.

The city with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge in their population category wins. Residents from winning cities will be entered to win thousands of dollars in prizes including a Toyota Prius, water-saving fixtures, and gift cards to Lowe’s Home Improvement Stores.

Santa Fe customer daily residential water use is 58 gallons per person, ranking Santa Fe among the nation’s most frugal cities on water use.

Heading into a third year of extreme drought, the City is asking individual customers to commit to using no more than 58 gallons a day.

Last year, the challenge awarded more than $50,000 in prizes to 1,200 residents in U.S. cities.  But, most importantly, participants can see real results based on simple actions they do to save water and energy.  Santa Fe residents can enhance their knowledge of resources to take their commitment of conservation even further, from regional water resources issues to cost-saving tips at home.

Keep it Up.  Keep it Down. Take the Pledge.
