Alternative Gift Market, Dec. 14-17 at DeVargas Mall

Alternative Gift Market
December 14–17, DeVargas Mall, Santa FeFriday 14th from 5:00-7:00 PM, Saturday 15th from 9:00 AM–8:00 PM, Sunday 16th from 10:00 AM–6:00 PM
Alternative GiftsShoppers interested in gift-giving that benefits those in need are invited to attend the third annual Santa Fe Alternative Gift Market, beginning with a grand opening celebration Friday, December 14th, from 5:00-7:00 PM, with a ribbon cutting by Mayor David Coss and Honorary Chair Ali McGraw.

The event is open all the weekend of the 15th and 16th during mall hours at the DeVargas Mall in Santa Fe: 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM on Saturday and 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM on Sunday. Visitors to the market will be able to enjoy light refreshments including hot cider and holiday-baked goods while considering their donations.

Last year, over $3,000 was raised for the Santa Fe Public Library to be able to purchase children’s books, summer reading programs, and teen programs.
Participants can select tax-deductible gifts that provide urgently needed assistance to local and international organizations providing medical help, shelter and food, working to reduce illiteracy, and assisting homeless veterans, among other programs. Gift givers can choose from more than 60 different items. The choice is enormous — gifts range from providing visits to dentists for Santa Fe children through La Familia Medical Center to legal representation for a girl rescued from sexual slavery in Asia; from sending a bicycle to rural health workers in Zambia to buying a children’s book for Santa Fe’s Public Library; and, paying for one night’s stay in Santa Fe’s Interfaith Shelter.

Alternative Gifts International is a non-profit organization that inspires support for humanitarian and environmental causes. It offers donors the option to designate charitable gifts through carefully selected agencies in the name of their relatives, friends and associates. Six local non-profits also benefit from this weekend program.

Interlibrary Loan is Open for Business this December!

A message from Santa Fe Public Library's Interlibrary Loan Department:

In years past, the ILL service has taken a bit of a hiatus during the month of December, in part due to many university libraries shutting down during their winter break.

This year, we’re going to keep the service going throughout December. This may mean that patrons who request items typically found only at university libraries will experience a delay in getting their books. Otherwise, everything should proceed as usual.

Happy holidays and happy interlibrary loans!

MP3 Audiobooks

Do you love listening to audiobooks on the go? If you do, you should check out MP3 audiobooks. MP3 audiobooks are in a different format than regular audiobooks. So, instead of handling 12 CDs, you handle 2 or 3. They are much easier to transfer to a portable listening device (MP3 player), and as long as you have a MP3-compatible CD or DVD player, you can listen in the car, on your computer, or at home.

MP3 audiobooks are easily found within the catalog, or visit the Library nearest you, and ask someone to point you in the right direction!

Here are the some “hidden gems” in our MP3 audiobooks collection:

1. Big Cat Nap by Rita Mae Brown
2. Fire and Rain by David Browne
3. Serpent’s Kiss by Melissa de la Cruz
4. Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness
5. A Touch of Dead Sookie Stackhouse by Charlaine Harris
6. 11/22/63 by Stephen King
7. Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult
8. Bones are Forever by Kathy Reichs
9. Fallen Angel by Daniel Silva
10. Rapture by JR Ward

Fun Fact:
Book on CDs holds approximately 74 minutes of audio
MP3 CDs hold up to approximately 12.5 hours of audio

Halloween Preschool Story time at Southside

Firemen from Stations 3A and Station 8 recently visited Southside during story time to educate children and parents about fire and road safety. Here are some photos:

Thank you, veterans!

Despite freezing temperatures and cloudy skies on Veterans Day, Santa Fe showed up to honor our veterans! The one concession to the cold weather was that the speeches were held inside of the Bataan Memorial building, for which all participating were extremely grateful. (And equally grateful that the twenty-one gun salute was NOT moved indoors.)

Mayor Coss Praises Library Volunteers in State of the City Speech

"It’s not just the city employees who make our City programs work, it’s also citizens who give their time and energy. Our senior services have benefited from more than one-hundred seventy-thousand volunteer hours from retired senior volunteers and senior companion volunteers, that amounts to more than 82 full-time employees. Our libraries benefited from more than thirteen-thousand volunteer hours last year, which is equivalent to more than six extra full-time employees. One thing these Library volunteers did was raise money to bring in teenagers and provide fun, safe, things to do. It worked. Our libraries brought in sixty percent more teenagers this year. Volunteers magnify the investment in our libraries and the services available to our seniors and youth and that makes this a stronger, healthier, more engaged community".
