Santa Fe Public Library Director Pat Hodapp has retired

The longtime director of Santa Fe’s public libraries has closed a chapter on her life and started another one as a retiree.Patricia Hodapp, who joined the library staff in Santa Fe in 2004, officially retired Jan. 31, according to a news release.

Prior to coming to Santa Fe Hodapp served for 12 years as director of marketing for the Denver Public Library, where she helped shepherd the library through a system expansion, as well as building a new main library downtown.

Similarly, she worked closely with the library board and supporters to develop Santa Fe’s south side library. She was also instrumental in developing the “Books and Babies” program, now in its 13th year. Last year, Hodapp oversaw the extension of hours at the La Farge branch and worked with Friends of the Library on a study of library services, buildings and needs to help guide future planning.

Hodapp was winner of a New Mexico Book Co-op’s literary award in 2015 for her ongoing support of local authors and books. She is an author herself, having penned “The Complete Santa Fe Bucket List: 100 Things to do in Santa Fe Before You Die” in 2016.

Libraries are a gift to everyone. Today, they are more than the library of your childhood. Libraries are bursting with books, media, technology and programs to tempt you to explore and widen your world, whatever your age.

Libraries have become the hubs of their communities. They provide that place where everyone is welcome.

According to recent studies, parents feel they are better parents if they take their children to the library. And they should! Exposing children to the library is crucial to their children’s mental and social growth.

One of the Santa Fe Public Library’s innovative programs is Books and Babies, which I started over 12 years ago at the then-new Southside Library. With the vision and support of the Brindle Foundation, thousands of young children and their caregivers have been exposed to the magical world of books and song. This is just one of hundreds of programs that the library provides year round.

With the support of our generous community giving through the Friends of the Library, you can see a wolf, enjoy opera for children, hear authors and much more. All for free.

The library’s technology and databases can provide access to information, and such diverse programs as learning languages and homework help or finding just the information you need to fix a truck or how to bake at high altitude. Plus free internet and WiFi.

Many of the children who were at the Southside Library’s opening in 2007 are now are in college or raising families of their own.

Joining the 3,600 people attending the library’s 10th anniversary celebration were former Mayors Larry Delgado, Javier Gonzales and David Coss, who attested to the value and importance of libraries and all that librarians do.

Libraries have been a part of my life ever since I first rode my bicycle to our rural library at age six. What a joy it is to see that same excitement in children today. Recently, a child asked her mother if she could come to the library with her friends for her birthday rather than going to a commercial party place. Hurrah!

This year, you will have the opportunity to take part in a community survey to determine the future of our libraries and the services they will provide. Share your vision.

These are just some of the many highlights I have experienced over the 13 years I have proudly served as the director of the Santa Fe Public Library.

I thank the Library Board for its support, as well as the wonderful staff who provide the best customer service day after day to our patrons.

My retirement won’t take me far from libraries as they are woven into the fabric of my life.

Santa Fe Community College and AARP Foundation Offer Free Income Tax Help

Santa Fe Community College, in partnership with AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, will host free income tax preparation assistance beginning Feb. 4 through April 15. This year, the free service will be available on an appointment basis at a new location, the Santa Fe Higher Education Center, 1950 Siringo Road.  AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service. The services are provided by volunteers from the community. This year the Higher Education Center is the only AARP Foundation Tax-Aide site in Santa Fe.

AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide Santa Fe is now taking appointments either online or by calling 505-946-3615. To read more about the program and access the online registration link visit sfcc.edu/taxaide/. Those who do not have computer access can call 505-946-3615. A volunteer will return your call. The tax assistance appointments will be available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, as well as 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays. Reservations are required, however, AARP will accommodate a limited number of walk-in clients based on availability and will make reservations at the HEC on tax preparation days.

Tax-Aide services are not available during any holidays observed by the HEC including the Spring Break from March 18 through March 24. Please note: Tax-Aide services will also observe all HEC weather delays or closures (appointments affected by weather delays or closures will be re-scheduled). The State Director of AARP New Mexico Gene Varela said, “We’re delighted to partner again with Santa Fe Community College to offer this service through AARP’s foundation. The new location at the Santa Fe Higher Education Center has plenty of parking and is a great mid-town location to serve the community.”

In addition to providing the location for tax preparation services, SFCC accounting students who were trained specifically for the service will be among the volunteers available to assist anyone in filing their taxes.

Those seeking assistance with their tax return must have all tax forms collected prior to coming in for help. Be sure to bring all of the information and documents you need, including these items:

• Copy of prior year return, if available
• Photo ID of the primary filers
• Social Security Card or ITINs for parents and children or dependents
• Social Security year end statement
• Proof of health insurance
• Income documents: W-2s; 1099’s for retirement income or self-employment; interest, dividend, stock or CD sales; Unemployment (W2-G) form; Gambling win/loss documents from casinos
• List and supporting documents for expenses: child care, college or vocational training, medical expenses not covered by insurance – including mileage, charity donations, property tax bills or receipts (Santa Fe and Los Alamos County only) and mortgage interest paid
• To have your refund direct deposited, bring a blank check or savings card
• For married filing jointly returns, both individuals must be available to sign documents

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program cannot prepare returns that include:

• Rental income
• Self-employment returns with expenses of $25,000 or more, home office deduction, employees, inventory or operating loss
• Married Filing Separately
• Royalty income with associated expenses
• Casualty loss

Call for Artists at the Main Library

Artists wishing to exhibit their work at the Main Library, 145 Washington Ave., should fill out a Main Library Art Application. The Art Committee will meet next on January 2, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the Pick Room at the Main Library to meet with prospective artists and schedule art shows for the year. The Santa Fe Public Library accepts applications from local artists for consideration of art exhibits. All applicants must live in the city or county of Santa Fe, be eligible for a library card, and follow the Information and Exhibit Guidelines and Art Exhibit Policy.

Friday Afternoon Art on Dec. 7 is a stop on the new Holiday Passport from the Santa Fe Arts Commission

The City of Santa Fe Arts Commission is excited to announce the launch of the Holiday Youth Culture Passport. Based on the successful Summer Youth Culture Passport, the Holiday Passport offers kids and their guardians free events happening in Santa Fe from December 1, 2018 through January 1, 2019. 

The Holiday Passport is available on a just-launched smartphone application, making it easy to use. The app is available to Android users on at Google Play and iPhone users on iTunes. It is free to download and use:

“Made on Route 66” film presentation at the Main Library, Sunday, December 9, 2:00 p.m.

Load the family into the VW bus, hop into your jalopy, rev up your Thunderbird! New Mexico film historian Jeff Berg presents a FREE motion picture road trip along Route 66!  

"Made on Route 66" is a compilation series showcasing movies made along the Mother Road; it will play at the Main Library (145 Washington Ave.) on Sunday, December 9 at 2 p.m.

The show will screen clips from beloved movies ('The Grapes of Wrath', 'Rain Man') and buried treasures, such as 'Damnation Alley' and 'Starman' and several other Arizona, New Mexico and California-made films as well. Berg provides behind-the-scenes anecdotes along with tongue-in-cheek and critical insight along the way and audience participation is strongly encouraged. 

Additional featured film clips will include 'How the West Was Won', 'Easy Rider', 'Route 66', 'Forrest Gump' and 'Mars Attacks!', among many others. It will truly be a nostalgic trip down memory lane on one of the most famous and celebrated (and well-traveled) roads in the world.

Jeff Berg is a Santa Fe, NM-based freelance writer, film reviewer, and New Mexico film historian. He was also a board member and event planner for the Mesilla Valley Film Society in Las Cruces, NM for 12 years and the Assistant Manager of the Jean Cocteau Cinema in Santa Fe.

For the past eight years, he has traveled around New Mexico from corner to corner presenting his noted film clip series which features clips of movies made in New Mexico, doing live narration for each show. 

As a writer, Berg's work has authored two books, 'New Mexico Filmmaking' * a history of movies made in NM, and the brand new 'Historic Movie Theatres of NM', released in July. His work has appeared in numerous regional publications including New Mexico and True West Magazines, Film Comment Magazine, Desert Exposure (Silver City, NM), and the Santa Fe New Mexican.
