SFPL Presents: Wildlife Rescue, Nov. 14-15

Santa Fe Public Library Holiday Book Fair, Sunday, November 23, 1-4 p.m.

The Santa Fe Public Library’s Main Library (145 Washington Street) will be hosting a Holiday Book Fair on Sunday, November 23, for gift buyers or people who want new books at a great price for their own collection. The Book Fair will feature area publishers: SAR Press, AZRO Press, Bathtub Row Press, ABQ Press, New Mexico Book Association, and LPD Press/Rio Grande Books. Books for sale will be from Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Albuquerque, and other locations. There will be new books for sale at $1 and other steep discounts as well as recent releases. It is a place to go for books for the holidays and benefit the Santa Fe Library at the same time. Many of the books for sale are award-winning books.

In addition to the sale, there will be a special presentation of "How Chile Came to New Mexico" by Albuquerque author Rudolfo Anaya, illustrations by Nick Otero of Los Lunas, and translation by Nasario Garcia of Santa Fe. Books signed by all three will be available. Otero will have the original art from the book for people to see. There will also be a silent auction of signed books to benefit the Friends of the Santa Fe Library.

The event will be held in the Community Room of the Santa Fe Main Library from 1-4 p.m. and admission is free and open to the public.

Columbus Day Closures:

City offices, Municipal Court, libraries and recreation centers will be closed on Columbus Day, Monday, October 13, 2014.

Santa Fe Trails’ buses and Santa Fe Ride will operate on the Saturday schedule; Environmental Services Division will have regular scheduled collection for commercial and residential recycling and solid waste. Residential customers will need to have their recycling and solid waste placed at curbside by 8:00 a.m.; the Buckman Road Recycling and Transfer Station and the Caja del Rio Landfill will be open.

New Sculpture at Southside Branch Library!

From the artist:

“As to "Story"....  This piece is part of a group that embraces animals and plants within the Earth elements.  I am able to visit the Sea of Cortez each year and snorkel with a large variety of fish, sometimes swimming within schools containing hundreds of fish.  These vacation events seem to have influenced me greatly without me planning it, the result being sculptures that embrace life forms.  The boat shape is a magical symbol I use often, a vessel shape, the feminine principle, in this instance I stripped it to its structural bones.   

How I Work-

I will first have an image of a sculpture in my mind then I will do a quick sketch to capture the concept.  Next I will design the sculpture while thinking about how it will be constructed taking into consideration materials I have on hand.  I also design a work to be in parts that can be assembled by one or two people without a lot of fuss.  Next step is to begin construction of the piece, which is a wonderful journey.”
