Summer Reading, Cody Landstrom, June 3-4

Pat Hodapp, author of “101 Things To Do In Santa Fe Before You Die” reads at Collected Works and the Santa Fe Public Library

Pat Hodapp, director of the Santa Fe Public Library, will read from and sign her book “101 Things to do in Santa Fe Before You Die” at Collected Works and the Santa Fe Public Library in June. It is a light hearted and witty guide book to all things Santa Fe. From the O’Keeffe Museum to where to find the best chocolate and from finding inexpensive ways to enjoy music and the opera, Hodapp has them all.

Hodapp will read from her book and sign her book at Collected Works Bookstore and Coffee Shop on Thursday, June 9 at 6:00 pm, at 202 Galisteo Street.

The Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library are hosting a reading and signing at the Main Library, 145 Washington Avenue, on Sunday, June 12 at 2:00 pm.  Refreshments will be served.

Anne Hillerman says, ”This gem of a book offers unique and valuable suggestions for visitors and locals , things to see and do for all ages, in all price ranges, throughout our ancient city.”

Hodapp started the book with questions that she has been asked in the library and on the street.  She enjoys encountering visitors with the simple question, “Where are you heading?”  Then helps guide them to their destination with suggestions on how to explore Santa Fe and how to get a feel for this magical City.  “Narrowing down the suggestions and ideas to 100 was the first challenge.  There were so many great ideas the book also has a “Near Miss” section that gives everyone a wider view of what is wonderful about Santa Fe.”

Partial proceeds of the sale of Hodapp’s book will benefit the Santa Fe Public Library’s Spanish/Bi-Lingual Books and Babies programs.

For more information contact Pat Hodapp at 505-690-8620 or contact the publisher LPD/Rio Grande books at paulpd@aol.com or (505) 344-9382.

“Depression Era Photography: The Farm Security Administration Documentation of Rural New Mexico, 1936-1942,” Thursday, May 19, 5:30 p.m. at the Main Library

From the Santa Fe New Mexican:

The New Mexico chapter of the National New Deal Preservation Association on Thursday will present a talk by historian Baldwin G. Burr of Los Lunas about Depression era images of rural New Mexicans captured on film by great photographers like Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans.

The free public lecture, “Depression Era Photography: The Farm Security Administration Documentation of Rural New Mexico, 1936-1942,” will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Main Library.

During the Great Depression, says a news release on the talk, the plight of poor, rural families across America went largely unaddressed until the Farm Security Administration began documenting it. The agency recruited some of the nation’s finest photographers to show how the Depression was affecting rural America, including in New Mexico.

Library Value Calculator

Libraries are a great value to our communities, and you can visit the American Library Association’s Library Value Calculator to find out how much your Santa Fe Public Library card is saving you and your family per year! A local father input their library usage and found that our library saved his wife, 2-year-old son, and himself a total of $2951.40! His family regularly checks out children’s and adult books, graphic novels, eBooks, DVDs, CDs, and attends Children’s programs at the library. A local retired professor that regularly uses Inter-Library Loan, borrows opera CDs and movies plus checks out books, found that his savings were $4,603.00.

Santa Fe Public Library spends $44.15 per city resident for library services. Library funding comes from the City budget from Gross Receipt Taxes and ½ percent CIP for the three libraries.

According to the American Library Association, “Libraries are among the most effective of all public services, serving more than 2/3 of the public with less than 2 percent of all tax dollars. Public libraries are a bargain”.

Visit the website today to find out what a great value the Santa Fe Public Library is and support your local library!
