Water Conservation Office Educates 4th Grade
Students
About the Vital Role Water Plays in Our Daily Lives
WHAT:
16th annual Santa Fe Children’s Water Fiesta, sponsored by the City
of Santa Fe Water Conservation Office. Hundreds of fourth graders from
throughout Santa Fe will gather at the convention center September 19 & 20
for interactive learning and fun. In addition, the Passport Program which takes
classes on the path of water in Santa Fe will launch during the Water Fiesta.
WHERE:
Santa Fe Community Convention Center
WHEN:
September 19th and 20th, 9:55 am to 1:00 pm
WHY:
During the event students will learn about all facets of water, from
conservation and wastewater to ecosystems, watersheds and pollution. Experts
will present water-related facts, concepts and values through fun, hands-on
learning activities.
The
classes are designed to cover core teaching curriculums in math, science,
social studies, language and visual arts, and health and wellness. Santa Fe
public school fourth-grade teachers were invited to apply for either the Water
Fiesta or the full Passport Program earlier this month.
WHO:
Last year, approximately 650 students participated in the Water Fiesta. This
year, with the launch of our Passport Program and the addition of Peer
Educators from local high schools, we anticipate having approximately 800
students participate in this event.
The City of Santa Fe Water Conservation Office organizes
the fiesta with help from state, federal and non-profit organizations
involved in water issues. Presenters include representatives from Sandia
National Laboratories, New Mexico Office of the State Engineer, the Surface
Water Quality Bureau of the New Mexico Environment Department, U.S. Forest
Service, New Mexico State University, The City of Rio Rancho, Keep Santa Fe
Beautiful, Buckman Direct Diversion and City Water and Wastewater Divisions.
