Hurrican Relief Food Drive at SFPL




Library staff and patrons stepped up at the SFPL to purchase much needed items for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. This picture depicts just the donations from the Main Library collection—La Farge and Southside also took part.  Congratulations for the great support and thanks to everyone involved!

Call for Artists at the Southside Branch Library

Artists wishing to exhibit their work at the Southside Branch, 6599 Jaguar Drive, should fill out a Southside Branch Art Application. The Southside Branch Art Committee will set a date to review and schedule art displays. For more information, please call 505-955-2824.

The Santa Fe Public Library accepts applications from local artists for consideration of art exhibits. All applicants must live in the city or county of Santa Fe, be eligible for a library card, and follow the Information and Exhibit Guidelines and Art Exhibit Policy.

Water Conservation Office Educates 4th Grade Students
About the Vital Role Water Plays in Our Daily Lives

WHAT: 16th annual Santa Fe Children’s Water Fiesta, sponsored by the City of Santa Fe Water Conservation Office.  Hundreds of fourth graders from throughout Santa Fe will gather at the convention center September 19 & 20 for interactive learning and fun. In addition, the Passport Program which takes classes on the path of water in Santa Fe will launch during the Water Fiesta.

WHERE: Santa Fe Community Convention Center

WHEN: September 19th and 20th, 9:55 am to 1:00 pm
WHY: During the event students will learn about all facets of water, from conservation and wastewater to ecosystems, watersheds and pollution. Experts will present water-related facts, concepts and values through fun, hands-on learning activities.
The classes are designed to cover core teaching curriculums in math, science, social studies, language and visual arts, and health and wellness. Santa Fe public school fourth-grade teachers were invited to apply for either the Water Fiesta or the full Passport Program earlier this month.
WHO: Last year, approximately 650 students participated in the Water Fiesta. This year, with the launch of our Passport Program and the addition of Peer Educators from local high schools, we anticipate having approximately 800 students participate in this event.
The City of Santa Fe Water Conservation Office organizes the fiesta with help from state, federal and non-profit organizations involved in water issues. Presenters include representatives from Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico Office of the State Engineer, the Surface Water Quality Bureau of the New Mexico Environment Department, U.S. Forest Service, New Mexico State University, The City of Rio Rancho, Keep Santa Fe Beautiful, Buckman Direct Diversion and City Water and Wastewater Divisions.

Friends of SFPL Fall Book Sale at Main, Sept. 16-17

Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library will hold a book sale at the Main Library (145 Washington Ave.) on September 16 and 17. Discount books will be located in the Tatum Community Room (2nd Floor) and specially-priced books will be available in the Southwest Room.

Saturday, Sept. 16th: Members only from 10:00 a.m. – Noon (Memberships available at the door), open to the public noon – 4:00 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 17th: 1:00 – 3:30 p.m., open to the public, Bag Day in the Tatum Community Room, $5/bag, bags provided; specials continue in SW Room.

Specialty books and items are individually priced. Discount books and items as follows: Hardcover books $1.00 each, Paperback books 50¢ each or 3 for $1.00, Children’s books 25¢ each, CDs 50¢ per disc, DVDs $1.00 each.

Northern New Mexico Press Women present “Media Literacy in a Fake News World” at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Santa Fe Public Library Southside branch, 6599 Jaguar Drive, Santa Fe.

Panel moderator Inez Russell Gomez, editorial page editor of the Santa Fe New Mexican, will lead the conversation about fake news with Albuquerque Journal North editor Mark Oswald, Taos News editor Staci Matlock, PBS Newshour correspondent Kathleen McCleery and author James McGrath Morris. The free event is sponsored by the Santa Fe Public Library, New Mexico Press Women, the Society of Professional Journalists (Rio Grande Chapter), Santa Fe chapter of the League of Women Voters, the Foundation for Open Government and It’s the People’s Data.

Inez Russell Gomez has been editorial page editor for the Santa Fe New Mexican since 2012. Previously, she edited the newspaper’s award-winning special sections for six years. As a freelance writer, her work has appeared in People magazine, the Dallas Morning News and New Mexico Magazine. She also edited the Taos News and worked as a reporter and editor in Texas and Florida.
Mark Oswald is the long-time editor of the Albuquerque Journal North section. He also writes for the main Albuquerque Journal as well as the section.

Staci Matlock is editor of The Taos News. Prior to that, she was a reporter with The Santa Fe New Mexican for 17 years.

Kathleen McCleery is a special correspondent and freelance producer for the PBS NewsHour. She worked in broadcast journalism in Washington, D.C. – primarily for PBS but also for NBC News and other commercial outlets for 38 years before moving to Corrales in 2013. She taught journalism at Princeton University in the fall of 2016, and has written for print and online publications.

James McGrath Morris is a Santa Fe author who has written extensively on the history of journalism. Among his books are Pulitzer: A Life in Politics, Print, and Power and Eye on the Struggle: Ethel Payne, The First Lady of the Black Press.

Labor Day and Fiesta Holiday Hours

All three branches of the Santa Fe Public Library will be closed on Monday September 4 for Labor Day. All branches will be closing at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 8th for Fiestas. Regular hours will resume for La Farge and Southside branches on Saturday, September 9 and Main will reopen on Monday, September 11. ¡Que viva!
