Family Bedtime Stories at La Farge, Wed. February 6 at 6:30 p.m.

The Oliver La Farge Branch Library, 1730 Llano Street offers a series of Family Bedtime Stories. Join us on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30p.m. when Children's Library, Walter Cook, will select and conduct story times.

Cook has been a Children's Librarian for over ten years. Telling stories to families is one of my favorite things about being a Children's Librarian. Not only am I sharing great stories, I see families together listening and creating their own memories, says Cook.

Children and their families are invited to participate in fun stories and hands-on activities. This is a great opportunity to make literature come alive for the whole family, as well as build memories and stimulate family conversations.

For more information please call (505) 955-4867.

This free program is sponsored by the Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library.

New York Public Library to archive its collection of restaurant menus

This makes me hungry just thinking about it: http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/eats/new-york-library-archive-menu-1840-article-1.1249560. It's quite an undertaking, to say the least. This would be cool for Santa Fe as well, since it has a long history of fine foods and foodies that love them. Please comment if you know of any similar collection of resources in the area.

C-SPAN's visit to Santa Fe

This week C-SPAN came to town. To Santa Fe, that is. Their staff came in to set up interviews and film around town for their Cities program to air on February 2nd  and 3rd.  For the last two weeks, I along with other City staff, were making lists of recommended people and sites that represent Santa Fe.  C-SPAN did not want the usual suspects and yet as their staff had never been here before, what was “usual” to a lot of Santa Feans was new and exciting to them. What was refreshing was that they were open to ideas and had not come with a set agenda.

I am not sure they tried Frito pies or anyone told them about ordering food smothered with “Christmas.” But they raved about the friendliness, openness and welcoming attitude they received everywhere they went. Every time they interviewed someone they received a new list of recommendations—as the project coordinator said, one week is not long enough to really get to know Santa Fe.

Who did they interview? This is just a partial list, but outlines some of  the people interviewed and places they visited in Santa Fe: Dorothy Massey of Collected Works Bookstore; cartoonist Ricardo Cate; Pulitzer author Jamie McGrath Morris; City historian Jose Garcia, author Hampton Sides; Mayor Coss; Santa Fe Railroad expert Fred Friedman; the Capitol; Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and Abiquiu home; Literary Santa Fe’s Barbara Harrelson; Canyon Road; the Pojoaque Pueblo re-inauguration of Governor George Rivera and an Eagle Dance.

We learned a lot about C-SPAN too. Many of us had seen and followed parts of C-SPAN and C-SPAN 2, but were not aware of the incredible resource all of C-SPAN is to teachers and librarians in addition to the general public. Some of us are hooked on the BOOK-TV with live interviews with authors but not as aware of the historical programming. C-SPAN has over 170,000 hours of interviews/programs archived. Just briefly delving into their archive pulled up interviews with people who had been at historic events, adding a new depth to an event. For example, hearing Franklin McCain talk of his part in the Woolworth Counter sit-ins on the 50th anniversary of that event.

I have a feeling when C-SPAN comes back to New Mexico to cover Albuquerque in February, we just might see some of their staff slipping into Santa Fe to visit some of the places they loved or could not fit into this one show.

Weeklong Visit begins with January 8 Kick off

At the Community Convention Center at 4:00 p.m.

CITY OF SANTA FE and COMCAST Hosts C-SPAN

Kick off Event Features:
Mayor David Coss, Historian Jose Garcia, Santa Fe Public Library Director Pat Hodapp, Baile Espanol Dañcers, and a special presentation of the Don Diego De Vargas proclamation

In partnership with Comcast and the City of Santa Fe, Mayor David Coss, Historian Jose Garcia and Santa Fe Public Library Director Pat Hodapp will be on hand to welcome C-SPAN as the network prepares to feature the city’s history and literary life on the cable network’s non-fiction book channel BookTV (on C-SPAN2) and history channel American History TV (on C-SPAN3).

On Tuesday, January 8th at 4pm, Mayor  David Coss, Jose Garcia, and Pat Hodapp, along with Eilene Vaughn-Pickrell of Comcast, will give remarks at Santa Fe Community Convention Center (201 W. Marcy) to kick off the network’s week-long filming of various literary and historic sites, interviews with local authors and civic leaders.   C-SPAN representatives will announce the segments that will be explored during the weeklong visit to Santa Fe. There will be a special presentation of the Don Diego De Vargas proclamation. The media is invited to attend.

This event and others will air during a special Santa Fe feature weekend on February 2-3.
In Santa Fe, Comcast provides the C-SPAN Networks on these channels:  C-SPAN: 26; C-SPAN2:  27;  C-SPAN3: 105.

C-SPAN videojournalists are travelling in specially detailed Ford Transit Connect vehicles, which C-SPAN is calling Local Content Vehicles (LCV’s), visiting various literary and historic sites and interviewing local historians, authors and civic leaders.  Outfitted with the most current digital camera, editing and other recording technologies, each member of the LCV team is equipped to shoot and edit video on location as well as make presentations to schools and community organizations about C-SPAN and its public affairs content.

C-SPAN’s LCV project also incorporates extensive digital and social media outreach, including use of Twitter, Facebook, foursquare, and online streaming on C-SPAN websites.   C-SPAN video from each city will be archived – and easily searchable, clippable, and shareable – through C-SPAN’s online Video Library.

Santa Fe is the Tour's first visit of the New Year and in a new region of America: it is the Tour's first visit to a Southwestern USA city.  Over the coming months the Local Content Vehicle tour will make similar visits to: Albuquerque, NM, Mesa, AZ, Yuma, AZ, Palm Springs, CA, and Bakersfield, CA.

Thanks to Streets & Drain Maintenance

The Santa Fe Public Library’s Main Library’s parking lot grew a pothole in just days that could swallow a mini-Cooper. We were thinking of turning it into a trout pond. But the good staff at Streets and Drainage Maintenance responded quickly and came to our rescue filling the hole with slurry.  We know it won’t hold up to the cold and ice very long, but we are thrilled!  Next time they are called we will make sure they check in with us so we can provide coffee or a treat for their good work.
