The Caldecott Medal was named for Randolph Caldecott, one of three influential illustrators in England in the 19th Century. It is awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American Picture Book for Children published in the U.S.A. during the preceding year.
In 2008, The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick was given the award despite being a 533 page book and eight artists have won more than once. To see a list of all the winners go to www.ala.org where one can also access the Newbery and other Children's book awards and start picking your favorite books for this year's announcement on January 28th 2013.
