Ute Prayer Trees and Rock Art Lecture at La Farge Library, Saturday, February 21

Native Americans used oral storytelling and songs to pass on their history and culture.  After the arrival of Europeans the stories began to disappear.

Dr. James Jefferson, a Southern Ute Elder speaks the Ute language and knows the songs and stories of his people and is helping to teach the younger generations.  He believes that through film and interviews, the Ute stories, songs and culture can be saved for future generations.

Dr. Jefferson has specifically been studying Ute Prayer Trees and Rock Art, which are sacred to Native Americans.  Some trees point to water, shelter and stream crossings. Come hear Dr. Jefferson tell about his research and findings in New Mexico and Colorado.
