The contest, held annually, selects the best book in New Mexico. To be considered, the book can be by a New Mexico author whenever it was published, published by a New Mexico company or the focus of the book is about New Mexico. That is pretty wide open for nominations. The only book librarians can’t vote for is Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me Ultima, because it won last year.
The public can’t vote this year, but I am sure the librarians are open to your suggestions. Oh, and you are giving me that box of candy? No, no, we can’t be bribed!
Hmm, Willa Cather? Erna Ferguson? Pen LaFarge? Cormac McCarthy? Denise Chávez? Oliver La Farge? Leslie Marmon Silko? Natalie Goldberg? Pat Mora? Angelo Jaramillo? N. Scott Momaday? Frank Waters? Too many choices.
Be sure to lobby for your choice by September 1st! You have a whole month to decide. Results will be announced in September.
