  • Practical Accounting and Budgeting - Saturday, November 2, 9 a.m. - noon.
Presenter: Maryanne Mowen. Don't let numbers get you down! This workshop will help business owners determine how best to keep track of, record, and use financial information. It is designed for business owners/finance officers who are currently using Quickbooks. They do it in a seemingly casual and effortless way, though there is a strategy to how they succeed. In this interactive workshop, former MGM studio executive Stephanie Palmer and professional writer Ben Taxy will share these pitching techniques and help you to customize what works in Hollywood for your own business. This workshop is designed for small business owners and entrepreneurs who are looking to find new clients, build their customer base, or secure financing from investors.

Information about contracts and contractual issues of importance to all small business owners, including the meaning of legal terminology frequently used in contracts will also be discussed, enabling workshop participants to determine what contracts say and what they mean. Expert presenter Marcia Swain has spent her career in the practice of law as well as mediation and negotiation.

Catch the Last Trout From the Santa Fe River Fishing Bag Limits and Tackle Restrictions Lifted On The Santa Fe River

Beginning Thursday, October 24, anglers will be allowed to catch and keep unlimited numbers of fish from a two-mile stretch of the Santa Fe River as the City of Santa Fe prepares to stop the flow from city reservoirs. The Department of Game and Fish issued the official emergency salvage order, to go into effect at 12:01 a.m. Oct. 24, and remain in effect through 11:59 p.m. Friday, November 1.

The salvage order will affect only the section of river from Paseo de Peralta two miles downstream to Camino Alire.

Tackle regulations also will be suspended during the salvage period for fish to be removed from the Santa Fe River, and appropriate fish salvage methods can be found at the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish website: http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/recreation/fishing/index.html. Anglers ages 12 and older are required to have a valid state fishing license.

The salvage order will allow anglers to remove trout from the Santa Fe River before it runs dry. The Department stocked more than 500 trout in the river this fall to provide angling opportunities during the highly successful Children’s Fishing Derby. People have caught most of those fish, but some may remain, mostly in the stretch of river downstream from the Paseo de Peralta bridge.

For more information about New Mexico fishing regulations and angling opportunities, please visit www.wildlife.state.nm.us.

Santa Fe Solid Waste Management Agency Announces Television Recycling and Bicycle Reuse Pilot Programs

Residents and businesses in the City and County of Santa Fe can now safely recycle their televisions during the TV Recycling Pilot Program! The Agency’s electronic waste recycler, Natural Evolutions of Tulsa, Oklahoma, has expanded their take-back program and can now accept televisions for the same fee as other electronic waste.  Natural Evolutions is an “e-Stewards” certified e-waste recycler which means that all e-waste collected by them is processed and recycled in the U.S.  Televisions were previously not accepted for recycling at the BuRRT facility because they contain around 4 pounds of lead in each CRT, which makes them cost prohibitive to recycle.  The recycling fee is 50 cents per 20 pounds.

The Agency is also excited to announce the Bicycle Reuse Pilot Program in partnership with the Chainbreaker Collective, a nonprofit alternative transportation advocacy organization.  Bicycles and bike parts that are brought to BuRRT as scrap metal recycling will now be diverted to the Chainbreaker workshop where volunteers will teach community members in need of bicycles for transportation how to build their own bike.  Chainbreaker will accept any usable bike parts including seats, chains, frames, handlebars, and more unless they are deemed unsafe for reuse.

Tomás Rivera, Executive Director of the Chainbreaker Collective, expresses, “Chainbreaker is excited about this new partnership with the Agency.  Chainbreaker's bicycle recycling program has been in operation for 9 years. During that time, we have distributed nearly 1,500 bikes to people who would have otherwise been unable to afford transportation. That has conserved nearly 2 million gallons of gasoline, saving riders nearly $6 million and preventing almost 30,000 tons of CO2 emissions from entering our air. This partnership will allow Chainbreaker continue to help people get where they need to go while preserving our natural resources and protecting our city's air quality.”

If you have a bike or bike parts you would like to donate directly to Chainbreaker, you can drop it off at their shop on 1515 Fifth Street on Sunday from noon to 4:00 pm or visit www.chainbreaker.org/brc for more information.

Residents and businesses can bring their electronic waste and bicycles to the Buckman Road Recycling & Transfer Station (BuRRT) facility 7 days a week from 8:00 am until 4:45 pm except holidays.  Visit www.santaferecycling.org for more information.

Upcoming Santa Fe National Forest Prescribed Burns

Fall provides good prescribed burning conditions—warm days, cool nights and good ventilation for smoke.  Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest plan to use this time to conduct several prescribed fires across the forest over the next few weeks to reduce hazardous fuels, improve wildlife habitat, and reduce overcrowding of vegetation.  The start dates and duration of the burns are subject to change depending on favorable conditions.  Through hand ignition firefighters will burn slash piles and conduct broadcast burns (burning surface fuels in a mosaic pattern).  Smoke may be visible intermittently through the coming weeks.

Name of the prescribed burn:  Borrego Mesa
Start date:  October 23 through November 15.
Location: Espanola Ranger District ,Borrego Mesa area, approximately 2 miles east of Cordova, NM, and 3 miles south of Truchas, NM.
Total acreage: The goal is to incrementally treat 110 acres
Possible smoke impacts:  Smoke may be visible from Santa Fe, Tesuque, Truchas, Cordova, Penasco and El Rito.

Name of the prescribed burn:  Mesa Camino
Start date:  October 23
Location: 15 miles NE of Gallina, NM, 8 miles north of the Coyote Ranger Station.
Total acreage: Approximately 200 acres (100 acres per day)
Possible smoke impacts: Smoke from the burn will be visible from Gallina, Coyote, Youngsville, Regina, Llaves, Canones, Ghost Ranch, Monastery of Christ in the Desert, Abiquiu and possibly Canjilon.  Smoke is expected to settle into lower elevations and in drainages during the evenings, but it should lift by mid-morning.

Name of the prescribed burn:  Gallina Wildland Urban Interface
Start date:  The week of October 21st or 28th
Location: 8 miles northwest of the community of Coyote and 1 mile south of the community of Gallina, NM.
Total acreage: 200 acres; 50-100 acres are planned for each day as conditions allow.
Possible smoke impacts: Avoid using Forest Road 76 due to potential smoke impacts.  Smoke may also be visible from Gallina, Coyote, Youngsville, Lindrith, Regina, Llaves, Ghost Ranch, Abiquiu, and possibly Canjilon.

Name of the prescribed burn:  Chaparral Wildland Urban Interface
Start date:  October 29th through November as weather permits
Location:  Cuba Ranger District, south of Rancho del Chaparral Girl Scout Camp
Total acreage:  190 acres
Possible smoke impacts: Smoke may impact Jemez, Gilman, San Ysidro, and might be visible from Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Cuba.

Name of the prescribed burn:  La Cueva
Start date:  October 29th
Location:  Pecos Ranger District, 4 miles west of Pecos, NM
Total acreage:  136 acres

Possible smoke impacts:  La Cueva, Glorieta, Canada De Los Alamos, La Joya, Apache Canyon, Pecos/Upper Pecos Canyon, Rowe, Santa Fe and Santa Fe watershed.
Name of the prescribed burn:  Santa Fe Watershed
Start date:  October 29th
Location:  Espanola Ranger District, 2-6 miles east/northeast of Santa Fe, NM
Total acreage:  120 acres
Possible smoke impacts:  Santa Fe, east of Santa Fe, Tesuque, and I-25; and to the East from Glorieta to the Pecos Canyon area.

Prior to actual ignition, fire managers will be considering many factors including:  fuel moisture levels, current and projected weather forecasts, fire personnel resources available, and air quality.  All these factors need to be in alignment in order to carry out a successful prescribed burn treatment.
The Santa Fe National Forest is committed to protecting sensitive areas from smoke to the greatest extent possible.  All prescribed burning is coordinated with NM Air Quality Bureau.  Smoke from prescribed fires is considerably less and of a shorter duration than smoke of wildfires that can burn for weeks and even months at a time.  Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory problems are urged to stay indoors with windows and doors closed when possible.
For more information about these prescribed fires, please call the Santa Fe National Forest at 505-438-5320.

City Seeks Submissions for the 11th Annual Children’s Water Conservation Poster Contest

Public, Private, Charter and Home-Schooled Students in Grades 1-6 Invited to Submit

Show Us that Saving Water is Always in Season

The City of Santa Fe Water Conservation Office invites all students in grades 1 through 6 to participate in the 11th Annual Children’s Water Conservation Poster Contest. This year’s theme is Saving Water is Always in Season.  Students are encouraged to creatively express one point of view about the importance of saving water year-round. The entry deadline is November 22, 2013.

“Water conservation is a critical issue in Santa Fe and anyone of any age can be part of the solution,” said Laurie Trevizo, City of Santa Fe, Water Conservation Manager. “When we help children understand water as a resource, we get smarter water users,” Trevizo stated.

This year’s theme addresses the impact of seasonal happenings and how less mountain snowpack, earlier or reduced peak spring stream run-off flows, greater summer evaporation loss, drought and extreme weather events all have consequences that impact our water supply sources.

Judging will take place in 2014 and the winners of the poster contest receive prizes and are featured in the 2015 calendar. The Grand Prize winning poster is displayed for a year on the back of a city bus and on the calendar cover.

To obtain poster paper, activities related to the theme and entry forms, please contact the Water Conservation Office at (505) 955-4225. Additional information and directions can be found at www.santafenm.gov/waterconservation.

GUIDELINES:
  • All posters must be drawn horizontally (landscape) on 11x14 white poster paper.
  • Students must work individually.
  • Only original artwork will be accepted.
  • Trademarked, copyrighted or reproductions such as popular media games or television characters are not allowed.
  • Depictions of the Earth should be used sparingly.
  • All entry forms must be taped to the back of the poster and include name of student, name of school, contact information, and parent or guardian signature.

Last year’s Grand Prize Winner was Third Grader Tristan Lujan, from La Mariposa Montessori. Here’s photo of her entry:

Celebrating the Great Literary City of Santa Fe

The Richard Harris Memorial Honor – free to the public on Sunday, October 13 at 7:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church at 208 Grant, celebrates individuals and organizations that have made lasting literary contributions to our city.

There will be music, readings by incredible readers, honor presentations, poetry, and refreshments.

From Barbara Beasley Murphy, New Mexico Book Association:
“Although not called a Celebration of the New Mexico Book Association, that's what this is.  Richard Harris helped create it, the city of Santa Fe encourages our artists who are writers, and the great state of New Mexico flourishes because of the Word Gotten Out.

You will learn about Richard Harris, hear readings from New Mexico authors and honor a few of the people who have created the great literary city of Santa Fe, profoundly affecting our lives.
It is a sign for us of a new era for dedicated writers, editors and publishers and book sellers with literary expressions revealing the heart of being human, its gift, its power and beauty.”
