City of Santa Fe Issues Request for Proposals $70,000 Available for Selected Projects to Bring in Younger Tourists

The City of Santa Fe’s Convention and Visitors’ Bureau is accepting proposals for Occupancy Tax Advisory Board (OTAB) funding. The deadline for proposal submission is close of business on April 23, 2013. The purpose of the funding is to provide marketing money to support sustainable annual events that bring overnight visitors to Santa Fe and increase tourism.

Local nonprofits are encouraged to apply. The new application form is now available online at www.santafe.org, under the link for OTAB Form at the bottom of the homepage.

Some highlights of the program include:
  • A single annual grant program
  • $70,000 dollars will be granted
  • Funds will seed marketing outside of Santa Fe to encourage visits to the community
  • Multi-year funding is available with a tiered match requirement in years 2 or 3
  • The application is in keeping with formats and criteria already in place for New Mexico State grants, which should make proposals among multiple agencies easier for applicants.
  • The application must be submitted by a nonprofit organization
  • For the sake of this application, off-season is defined as periods where historically, the occupancy has fallen below 50%. A 2012 analysis of occupancy is included in the application packet.

In July of 2012, the Santa Fe City Council approved Resolution 2012-70, a resolution directing staff to energize Santa Fe tourism by preparing a process for funding and other assets to establish event attractions that will bring a new generation of traveler to Santa Fe. The resolution required redefining OTAB grant funds to attract a younger tourist to Santa Fe while filling periods of low occupancy in area hotels and motels. Over the period since then, a comprehensive redesign of the program, application and process have been honed culminating in a new application and timeline for proposal consideration. PLEASE NOTE: The deadline to apply has been extended to April 23, 2013.

Those wishing to place a listing should visit the site and see the tab titled “Get Listed.” The website is actively marketed through a blog, newsletter, and other websites.

The City of Santa Fe Arts Commission is continuing to work with artists and arts businesses to further develop the organization and promotion of workshops that allow visitors to experience Santa Fe in a hands-on fashion. Partnerships and collaborations with the hospitality industry and other entities are welcomed, such as artist residencies and shared promotional opportunities. This initiative was created as a result of the city of Santa Fe’s 2005 appointment to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and builds upon the successful 2008 International Conference on Creative Tourism held in Santa Fe.

The City of Santa Fe Arts Commission (SFAC), an agency within the municipal government of the City of Santa Fe, provides leadership by and for City government in supporting arts and cultural affairs. The SFAC also recommends programs and policies that develop, sustain and promote artistic excellence in the community. Blind Date with a Book at Southside!

Blind Date with a Book Display

Looking to fall in love with a new book this spring?  Southside Library is ready to help!  Check out our new and exciting Blind Date with a Book Display; you might just luck out and find your dream book.

Here’s how it works: We have a group of specially selected (for their awesomeness) eligible books, ready and waiting for you to check out.  Most are adult fiction, but there are also a few non-fiction titles and young adult titles thrown in there, just to spice things up.

The catch is that you don’t get find out the identity of your book until after you check it out and take it home with you, because we have cleverly concealed everything except for a brief personal ad describing these fabulous, eligible books. You simply select whatever description strikes your fancy, check it out (no peeking), and hopefully discover a new favorite book!

We don’t think you can go wrong with any of our selections, so feel free to go on as many blind dates as you want. Happy reading!

Pysanky: a Workshop for Families, Friday, March 22 at Main

SFPL Library Director Pat Hodapp's Favorite New Mexican Authors

I was asked to put together a list of 10 NM authors (I cheated, there are 11 here) for a local website.  I did not want to include all of the usual suspects, not that they are not deserving of being on the list, but anyone can make a list with Cormac McCarthy, Michael McGarrity, Jamie McGrath Morris and Hampton Sides, just to name a few of our stellar authors.

Here is my eclectic list…in no particular order!

Ricardo Cate— Without Reservations. Cartoonist Cate has a wicked sense of himself, Indians and everyday happenings. A daily cartoonist for the New Mexican, most of us turn to the comics the minute one gets the paper in one’s hands in the morning. Yes, even before coffee.

Judith Van Giesen—The Stolen Blue. Great mystery set in New Mexico with Claire Revnier on the job solving the mystery.

Sallie Bingham—Mending: new and selected stories.  Always makes you want to read more of her books.

John Nichols—The Milagro Bean Field War. This classic tale of conflict between developers and the farmers in northern New Mexico will make you laugh out loud. And cry for the truth it tells.

Angelo Jaramillo—The Darker: Tales of the City Different.  A coming of age book with dark overtones set in Santa Fe. You cheer for Angelo to survive.

Tony Hillerman—The Blessing Way. Ah, Leaphorn and Chee start on their adventures in Dine country.

Anne Hillerman—Tony Hillerman’s Landscape.  Don Strell’s photographs and Anne Hillerman’s text with quotes from her father Tony, lets you visit all of the mysteries’ sites where Leaphorn and Chee lived and worked.

Lucy Moore—Into the Canyon: Seven Years in Navajo Country. Lucy moves to a Navajo reservation in 1968 and masters the steep learning curve of living on a reservation and how she can do meaningful work within the Native American culture.

Rudolfo Anaya—Serafina.  This children’s book is charming and works from the old tale of 1001 Nights. Serafina’s stories captivate her captor and we cheer for her. (And of course, he is the author of the iconic Bless Me, Ultima.)

Pat Mora—Dona Flora. (children’s book) The engaging tale of a female Paul Bunyon who lives in New Mexico. The illustrations are perfectly matched to the tall tale.

Joe Hays—The Day it Snowed Tortillas. (children’s book) The consummate story teller, Hayes creates some memorable plots and situations—even adults will laugh out loud.

I have included three children’s books in this list—Mora, Hays and Anaya.  They can be read and enjoyed by adults as well.

Each of these books brings Santa Fe and New Mexico to life—some humorous, some touching and some with characters that will stay with you for a long time. Am not sure all of these would be ones I would take to a desert island, but then maybe I would!

The Santa Fe New Mexican's editorial on the Libraries:

"The Main Branch and Oliver La Farge, much like the stuffed bear a child keeps close at night, have been loved nearly beyond capacity" ...

SFPL Now Hiring!

Many  times the Library staff have to take on many and sundry tasks, all in the course of a day.

But this job posting from the City seemed a little too broad:” Apprentice Pipefitter & Library Technician.

Ok, ok someone ran the two jobs together in the headline, but come to think of it there are some jobs that could be tied to library technician:

Library technician and jammed door fixer
Library technician and clean up specialist for little kids
Library technician and gardener
Library technician and photocopier fixer

All in the course of a day. Applications are open on the City’s Website right now: http://www.santafenm.gov/Jobs.aspx?UniqueId=121&From=All&CommunityJobs=False&JobID=Library-Technician-ClassifiedPartTime-20-1195
